At the end of 2009 the government announced a Scrappage scheme for old, inefficient gas boilers, analogous to the scheme that has been running for old cars. Early in 2010 details emerged of the scheme: a grant of £400 is available (until government funding runs out) for replacing a boiler which has a "Seasonal Efficiency" of 70% or less (SEDBUK Band G) with a boiler rated SEDBUK Band A (or certain "renewable" alternatives). The boiler to be replaced has to be the only one serving the property it is in installed in, and it has to be currently working (unless a resident is over 60). The grant is available to private landlords as well as owner-occupiers. Full details are on the Energy Savings Trust's website
To claim the money you need to:
You should within a few days receive a pack including a voucher (which just looks like an A4 form) for £400. You are supposed to wait for this before starting work on replacing the boiler, and the powers that be have the right to make an inspection before the work is carried out. In order to actually receive your money you need to complete the voucher form and send it with the installer's invoice for the work within 12 weeks of the voucher date.
